Office of Montana Governor Greg Gianforte
Michael Freeman currently serves as the Energy and Natural Resources Policy Advisor to Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana. Prior to serving in the Govenor's Office, he spent over a decade in Washington, D.C. serving in the federal government in both the executive and legislative branches and the private sector. He started his career as an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), handling natural gas pipeline and electric transmission issues. Following his service at FERC, he was an advisor to U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and then counsel to the House Committee on Natural Resources under Chairman Rob Bishop. Following his time on Capitol Hill, he was as a partner at CGCN Group, a leading policy consulting and public affairs firm, and then returned to federal service as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Environmental Management at the Department of the Interior during the first Trump administration. In 2021, he left Washington to return to his home state of Montana and joined Governor Greg Gianforte's staff, where he currently manages a diverse portfolio of energy, natural resources, and environmental issues. In addition, he currently serves as Chairman of the Montana Sage Grouse Oversight Team, as Montana's representative to the Western Interstate Energy Board, and as Montana's Staff Advisory Council member to the Western Governor's Association.
