Property rights are often wielded as a weapon against renewable energy projects, causing developers significant challenges when public sentiment shifts. However, it’s crucial to reclaim the property rights debate. From the very foundation of the United States, as affirmed in the Constitution of every state, property rights are one of our fundamental rights. In essence, we stand on the right side of this discussion. In my exploration of property rights, I delve into how they intersect with the free market, the 14th and 5th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, and James Madison’s Federalist Paper No. 10. Ultimately, I demonstrate that the safe and productive use of one’s property is the essence of supporting property rights and the free market. I also provide specific examples and illustrate how our traditional and conservative views of property rights have been beneficial to the nation. We shouldn’t be sheepish on this issue, and it’s time to position property rights as a triumphant force for renewable energy.
